Y on Wheels
In a remote area like Alaska, a lack of transportation can leave our military feeling trapped. The ASYMCA of Alaska believes that independence is a key ingredient in a person’s ability to thrive in Alaska. The ability to take care of important errands, attend medical appointments, and pursue recreational actives is imperative to maintaining both your physical and mental well-being.
The Y on Wheels Shuttle program provides our military community with access to all the facilities on the installation for only $1 per ride. With door-to-door service just a phone call away, no one need wait out in the cold in order to take care of their needs.
When asked what the Y on Wheels Shuttle Service meant to her, Sara had this to say: “It’s disheartening to me that such an incredible program needs justification. At a time when budget cuts afflict all community programs, this is a service that must persevere. Single soldiers, young families, wives with deployed spouses and disabled military members (just to name a few) all benefit from this service. It allows us freedom throughout the joint base, which in a location like Alaska where the weather can be harsh, is critical. In the past year alone, Y on Wheels made it possible for us to get around when our car got a flat that we couldn’t afford to replace after our cross country trip here; when I slipped on the snow and tore all the ligaments of my right ankle; when I was too scared to drive in the dark and snow; and most importantly (as a one car family), to get everything in order before my husband deployed. THANK YOU ASYMCA.”
The ASYMCA of Alaska is honored to be able to provide this small piece of freedom for our service members, vets, and military families who would otherwise be at the mercy of expensive cab rides or long dangerous walks in the snow. Each year, we provide nearly 20,000 rides to members of our military community—giving them safe access to all of life’s important destinations.
