Armed Services YMCA Whidbey Island to Close

June 17th, Washington, D.C- The Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA), a top rated 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to make military life easier for our junior enlisted military and their young families will be closing their Whidbey Island Branch located at 540 SE Pioneer Way, in Oak Harbor, Washington as part of their ongoing effort to fill the gaps and needs of junior enlisted and their families nationwide.   “With the opening of a child-care center on base our services were no longer fulfilling a priority need for military families. Less than 5% of our services were being used by junior enlisted military families, so we are working with military leaders to transition services to other military installations nationwide that are in greater need of assistance,” shared COO Tom Landwermeyer, Brigadier General, USA (Ret), “As a top rated charity, it is imperative that we continue to use donations wisely and make the biggest impact possible.”  The Whidbey Island location is scheduled to close on June 30th, 2013.

The ASYMCA has 33 branches and affiliates nationwide, and has supported the Whidbey Island military community for over 30 years. With shrinking defense budgets, troop and family programs are being cut at every military installation. The ASYMCA, in close coordination with military leaders, attempts to fill the highest priority gaps in support with innovative programs and services utilizing public donations and more than 13,000 volunteers.  The Armed Services YMCA plans to expand programs and services with a Department of Defense Affiliate to open at Camp Lejeune, NC in 2014, along with a YMCA Affiliate to open at the SW Illinois Y in the Fall of 2013 to serve military families at Scott Air Force Base.

The Armed Services YMCA Whidbey Island building/property is available for sale.  It is listed with Kathy Collantes at GO Realty. Interested parties may call GO Realty at 360-679-4646 for more information.
