Pembroke girl recognized for essay

An 8-year-old Pembroke girl finished second in her age bracket in the national Armed Services YMCA essay contest for children of military personnel.

Lara Federspiel earned a U.S. savings bond in the first- and second-grade category, rising above hundreds of other entries. The winners were announced in Washington.

Lara is the daughter of Janet and Navy 1st Lt. Jeffrey Federspiel.

She wrote, in her essay: “You should look at your own mom or dad or any one who is away and see how special they are! My dad is special to me because he cares for me. He protects me. And he is my Hero!”

Elementary schoolchildren from all branches can participate in the annual contest, on topics related to being in a military family. The Armed Services YMCA, part of the YMCA of the USA, has more than 150 program centers around the world.
