For over the last 150 years the Armed Services YMCA has existed to support active duty military and their families providing an enhanced quality of life. The Camp Pendleton branch was established in 1943 with a focus to the junior enlisted. Early services were exclusively recreational, then shifted to children and family crisis prevention in the mid 1970’s, to our current core programs: elementary after school education, Mommy & Me preschool, food and emergency financial support, transportation, recreation center, summer camps, and a holiday program for families with children. Our young military families have a difficult time in a high cost area of Southern California. With low pay and the shrinking defense budgets, we are seeing family programs being reduced or even eliminated. Collaborating with Camp Pendleton officials and community leaders, the branch builds relationships, programs, and services by generating revenue to develop new and expand existing programs to help fill the gaps left from previous programs. Two examples of community support to the Marine students at the School of Infantry are with volunteers serving hot meals over 40 times during the year, and 400 families adopt the students for Thanksgiving Day. The branch benefits from over 200 volunteers annually providing over 4,000 hours of support serving an average of 36,000 Marines, Sailors, Soldiers and their families. Please partner with our branch in servicing these young Americans who are providing for our security by donating or volunteering to help make their military life a little easier.
