Armed Services YMCA sets new record written in mud
Norfolk Navy Flagship | August 12, 2010
More than 2,500 runners of all ages participated in Saturday’s Armed Services YMCA’s 10th annual 8K Mud Run held onboard Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. This fun filled family oriented event provided more obstacles, more challenges and lots of mud!
The Mud Run has become a signature event for the ASYMCA, a non-profit organization serving junior military families throughout Hampton Roads. The proceeds from the Mud Run help the ASYMCA provide junior military families childcare, child development, spouse support activities and much more.
“What a great event,” stated Bob Duetsch, director of the ASYMCA of Hampton Roads. “We had great weather and a great turnout, a record number of runners. I couldn’t ask for anything more!”
Each year, the ASYMCA gives adult runners an 8K, mud-slinging, heart-pumping course to conquer and a fun-filled, but challenging Mini-Mud Run for children ages 5-12.

Armed Services YMCA celebrates Healthy Kids Day, military child
Paraglide Online | August 9, 2010
Abram and Bradley Sitcer constructed a bughouse and an herb garden holder in the kids workshop section of the Fort Bragg/Pope Air Force Base Armed Services YMCA Healthy Kids Day Saturday. The two brothers, 3 and 4 years old respectively, attended the annual event with their mother, Amanda Sitcer.
She took pictures and said she would send them to her husband who is serving in Haiti.
“It is actually really fun and they’re having a lot of fun. It’s going to be nice to send their dad pictures of this since he can’t be here,” Sitcer said.
The Family has lived on Fort Bragg a little more than a year, she added, and often attends post events, which gives the boys something to look forward to and appreciate.
“They’re small enough that they’re enjoying it. It gives them a day to get their minds off the fact that their dad’s not home yet,” Sitcer said.

On the Run
A Few laps around the Hampton Roads Running Scene with Jon “Flex” Leiding
What a “DIRTY” weekend! The ASYMCA Mud Run in Virginia Beach this past Saturday was a great diversion from all the straight training
we’ve been doing for other races. Mud, obstacles, and other surprises greeted 2100 runners. Each of you who got in on the action
were winners in my book. Ryan Carroll led all the guys, while Chelsea Burns was the first finisher for the ladies. Procedes benefited the
Armed Services YMCA.
Youth was Served! At Norfolk State, the AAU Jr. Olympics came to town. The Nation’s top youngsters really shined. Just to be able to compete, these kids had to qualify and were amongst the tops in their events. Hampton Roads was well represented with several local track clubs with great showings. Congratulations to all of them. Next years Jr. Olympics will be in New Orleans. The future for the sport looks very bright!

Armed Services YMCA Mud Run
Runner’s World | August 9, 2010
8k of rolling sand dunes, beach, military type obstacles, deep sand and some narrow wooded trails. Is the course hard? Well…the winning time for my AG is usually around 42 minutes. This was the tenth annual running of the race and it sold out.
I had entered with a coed team, but one of the members couldn’t make it, so we were DQ’d. They did let us shift to the individual AG and run, but we were stuck in the coed team gate (5th/last). Not much of a chance for AG glory mixed with the teams on this course. I ran with another team that I knew and had a blast. I didn’t win anything and my time was horrid because a couple of the obstacles had long back ups.

Local Runns News “On the Run”
Wavy.com | August 2, 2010
What a difference a week makes “On the Run”. With the break in the heat, the races outside started to become more enjoyable.
CONGRATS to the winners this week. From Tuseday’s Memorial 5k at Botanical Gardens, Renee High posted a swift 17:50 winning the women’s division on a winding course. Ryan Carroll topped the men’s side then got the double by capturing the Military Challenge 3.5 mile run at the Sportsplex Saturday. I was on my long run that day and when I ran past, it seemed as if the people handling the mud pit were really happy to add extra mud while runners came through.
Most people left left muddy, but satisfied by the new race.
OFF TO THE RACES! All this week, the AAU Jr. Olympics are in town, with the Track & Field events held at Norfolk State University. The Track is in great shape and the youth are the best in the country. You had to qualify to get to this level.
