A mentoring program started on Fort Bragg in March 2000 that not only improves self-esteem and grades, but also allows children to find there are “heroes” inside each of them. The program, which runs for 10 weeks three times a year, targets children from 6 – 12 years of age that are experiencing temporary difficulty in school, either socially or academically. Referred by teachers, parents or school officials, the bi-weekly sessions provide after school homework assistance and mentoring in a small group.
