July 2015 – November 2016
Hampton Roads, start your engines! We invite you to join us for a Poker Run on our nation’s Independence Day.
Hosted by the Armed Forces Motorcycle Club of Virginia. We’ll start at their clubhouse at 9:00 am (1170 Lance Rd. in Norfolk) with free Starbuck’s
coffee to get you going. Here you will register for the day and draw your first card. Kickstands up at 11:00. If you like, you can register in advance right now. Just $20 gets you the ride, a cool t-shirt and a plate of BBQ! Can you think of a better way to spend the day?
We will have some fun stops along way and end up at Grumpy’s on Kempsville Road for some delicious BBQ, good music, and final card draw. We’ll even wrap it up by 6:00 pm so you won’t miss the fireworks.
You can even buy a ticket for a chance at a Harley Davidson Engine. All proceeds benefit the Armed Services YMCA and stay right here in Hampton Roads where we serve all five branches of our military.
Thank you to our sponsors! USAA, Grumpy’s, Biker’s Depot, Starbucks, Hooters, and Cycle Gear.
Do you know an outstanding military family who is always there to offer a helping hand to others? A family who volunteers in their community or within their command. We want to celebrate them at our Annual Five Star Military Family Recognition Luncheon in November. Each year we select a family from each branch of the military who best represents their branch by serving others.
The family can be nominated by their command, by business, civic leagues or non profit organizations. The nominees are are vetted through a selection committee comprised of representatives from our Major Community Partners. The winning families are then honored at the luncheon.
We need your help in finding these special people in our community. To nominate an outstanding military family just click here and tell us all about them.
Selection Criteria: Active duty E-6 or below and with a minimum of 1 year of service, Family must exemplify integrity and the core values of their branch of service, Nominated family should have a record of community service and be available to attend the ceremony on November 6th at the Westin Town Center in Virginia Beach.
Nomination packages must be received no later than October 10th, 2015.

This event has such a meaningful purpose. Here’s a sample of what it means to our participants.
“I want to thank you and all the sponsors for a great day. I went on the trip year before last and had a great time and looked forward to going this year. I was unable to participate last year. I am a Vietnam era veteran and can remember those returning from Vietnam were told not to wear your uniform when you returned to California because we would be spit on and harassed by the protesters. It was heartwarming to be received as we were yesterday and be treated the way we were. Again I thank all those who had a part in making this a great day for me and the others like me. With my disabilities there are many things I can no longer do. But this Hearts for Hero’s, I look forward too and really have a good time with all who are involved. Thanks for what you do.” Harry Slaughter
Thank you to our sponsors for making it all possible.

The Armed Services YMCA of Hampton Roads has an extensive Thanksgiving Assistance program that provides a turkey and all of the fixings for military families in need. The program relies heavily on food drives and monetary donations from the community to provide this outreach each year. Thanks to donations from Serco, Seven-Eleven, Ovation Brands, Navy Federal Credit Union, Geico, Bradley Morris and local military commands, we were able to provide a full Thanksgiving meal to 700 families in 2015.
Annually, we receive over 1000 requests for assistance. Requests are generated by military commands and forwarded to our office. If you are looking for assistance, please contact your senior enlisted command representative. Referrals will be handled by our Fleet Readiness Director Jamie Brown.
Our goal for 2015 is to raise $15,000 in cash donations from the community and 1000 each of specific food items. If you have a group or business that would like to partner with us by holding a food drive for 2015, please contact our Donor Relations Director Chrystal Lewis for specific instructions. Posters and boxes are available upon request.
If you or your group would like to volunteer to organize and distribute meals, please contact Amy Winstead
