Child Development Programs
At the ASYMCA, we understand the difficulties military families face in raising children through deployments and changing duty stations. That is why our programs are licensed, affordable, and tailored to the needs of military and civilian families alike to better serve our Hampton Roads community. We recognize the unique character and temperament of each child, and support developmentally appropriate activities to foster social, emotional, intellectual and physical growth. Our counselors are professional role models, carefully selected, mission and safety minded individuals who want to see each child reach his or her full potential.
We partner with parents to provide care specific to the needs and development of each child in our programs. To that end, we welcome parents in the classroom and encourage prospective families to visit our facilities programs in person before enrolling children.
We offer a history of excellent service and professionalism in child development. For 124 years, our programs have served the Hampton Roads military community. Please visit our testimonials page to find out more about our current impact on the Hampton Roads military community.

Every summer the ASYMCA hosts week-long day camps for military children ages 5-12. Summer camp is a fun environment where children will learn, explore, craft, taste and experience life in a whole new way. Through positive role models and community partners, military children are given the opportunity to learn about the Hampton Roads area, build lasting friendships, and learn valuable life skills. Camp sessions are based out of our center in Virginia Beach.
Registration for Summer 2014 will begin May 1, 2014
The Armed Services YMCA provides quality, affordable child care to more than 100 children, giving them a safe and enriching learning environment while mom and dad are at work. All our child development programs are licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Social Services. Our staff are highly qualified, maintaining a current first aid and CPR qualification and participate in annual mandatory child development training. Your child’s safety is of the utmost importance to us. Before employment at our facilities, our staff members are required to pass a rigorous background investigation check with Child Protective Services and State and Federal Law Enforcement Agencies. Our facilities are a safe, clean, and fun environment for your child to learn and play in.
Before & After School Care
Our Before and After School Care programs are designed to meet the needs of working military parents like you by providing school-aged military children safe care in a positive environment. Your children are given the opportunity to complete homework, receive individualized tutoring, and explore other interests and hobbies after school in our structured, supervised care. In a values-centric environment, they also build friendships and refine social skills. Our program serves school-age children in Kindergarten through 6th grade, concurrent with the local public school calendar. We service Virginia Beach schools through our Lakeside location and partner with Sewell’s Point Elementary School to serve Norfolk schools. Bus services to and from school are provided.
Our Before School program runs from 6:30am until the beginning of the school day (9:00pm) and our After School program runs from the end of school (3:00pm) until 6:00pm. We serve early release days at no extra cost from as early as 1:00pm.
Our enrollment is ongoing throughout the school year to better serve moving military families. Please call to see if we have any current openings.

As part of our own social responsibility, the ASYMCA has established a scholarship fund for our child development programs. Subsidized scholarships are given to military families who are experiencing financial hardship. Scholarships are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and are offered when funds are available. Persons interested in applying for scholarships will need to meet with one of our Child Development Directors, Katrina Williams or Lakeshia Whitley.
