In 1995 the Armed Services YMCA began a program to help address the many challenges military children encounter. The hardships these children face may include feelings of isolation, self-doubt, frequent or long-term deployments, or even academic struggles due to frequent moves. Operation Hero assists first through sixth graders who are experiencing academic or social difficulties in school. Students are referred to the program by parents, teachers, or school officials who believe Operation Hero will guide them to find the Hero inside themselves.
During the semester long instruction, certified teachers provide one-on-one after school tutoring and mentoring assistance promoting social responsibility through team building activities. These enjoyable activities are created to model useful techniques that help the student effectively deal with anxiety, loneliness and conflict resolution Operation Hero stimulates a positive environment, encourages responsible behavior, and provides encouragement for students to establish a bright and successful path for the future.
