2013 Holiday Toy Program

The ASY’s 2013 Holiday Toy Program was a tremendous success. The toy distribution was held on Saturday, December 21, 2013 from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the ASY office. With the help of 60+ donors, and nearly 120 volunteers the ASY was able to serve 289 families and 620 children through the program. As one program participant put it “words can’t express what this means to my family and to me as a marine. It shows that there are still Great Americans out there!” Words truly can’t express how proud the ASY was to make Christmas a little brighter for so many families in 2013.

The Holiday Toy Program is no small undertaking. This year the ASY worked with 62 donors to distribute thousands of toys and over a hundred bicycles to more than 600 children. In order to accept, unload, sort and bag these items the ASY enlisted the help of 117 volunteers, including 25 volunteers to help on the day of the distribution itself. These volunteers were active duty marines, sailors and spouses who collectively gave 375 hours of their time to ensure that the families of Twentynine Palms had a very merry holiday this year. Beginning in the second week of December these volunteers were at the ASY every day working to sort and organize new toy donations and bag toys for each of the families who registered. We could not have done it without them!

Distribution day was an exciting and merry event as always. As the nearly 300 participating families picked up their toys they were entertained the beautiful sounds of the base Catholic Chapel choir singing Christmas carols, and enjoyed a visit with Santa, Mrs. Claus, and Santa’s elves. Santa was played none other than the ASY’s board member Jack McLaughlin, who is his Army Days actually served at the North Pole himself!

The ASY was proud to continue to provide the Holiday Toy Program to the Twentynine Palms Base Community in 2013. We were humbled by the gratitude of the families we served this year. This program means so much to the community and continues to grow each year. Its importance is best expressed by the words of those who participated–each of their families is unique and makes sacrifices each and every day, and deals with new and different challenges each day, but their gratitude unites them: “Thank you so much for all the wonderful holiday gifts. Our family appreciates this more than you know”… “Thank you for the gifts. This coming deployment will be hard on my daughter”…“To the people out there that put together this toy program for all of us [in the] military. We cannot thank you enough for everything that you all do for us. We are grateful and thankful a million times over. Have a wonderful happy Christmas and a prosperous new year!”

Of all of the wonderful things that each family had to say, the Rosasco family might have said it best: “Thank you all for the help…we are only as strong as the support” The ASY is proud to provide strong, meaningful, and lasting support to the families of Twentynine Palms.

The ASY would like to take this opportunity to thank its generous donors for their overwhelming generosity and support of the Holiday Toy Program. We could not have done it without you:
