Volunteer Spotlight

Each month we highlight one of the ASY Twentynine Palms Branch’s outstanding volunteers.

Joanie and Rick Saxon are two dedicated volunteers who recently celebrated four years of volunteering at the ASY. Rick is a retired Marine and he and his wife Joanie live in the Coachella Valley and make frequent trips to Twentynine Palms.

What made you want to get involved at the ASY?

Joanie: My husband, a 3-tour Vietnam Veteran, and I both wanted to do something for our Marines! Although we didn’t have the means to donate funds we could donate our time!

What projects have you been involved with and how has your experience been so far?

Joanie: Once we knew we wanted to be involved we started picking up donated items from Sun City and PGA West and all over the Coachella Valley and driving the donations up to Twentynine Palms in our pick-up truck.

Rick: In four years we’ve brought over 500 loads of furniture, appliances, kitchen equipment, and clothing up to the Armed Services YMCA Thrift Store.

Joanie: We split the work – I go and pick up the smaller items and Rick arranges for the big ones.

What is something in your life that you LOVE, and what is your favorite thing to do in your time off?

Rick: I love history and politics, and I like to spend my time traveling to places I’ve never been.

Joanie: I love my hubby Rick and our Schnauzer, Hoover Lee Saxon Dog! And of course our kids and grandkids and great grandkids. We love to cruise to places we’ve never been when we have the time.

What keeps you coming back to the ASY?

Joanie: Even though we are getting older and have health issues, we can’t say no to the Marines and Sailors that need us.

Rick: We all know the saying “Once a Marine, always a Marine.” As long as I can I will continue to help these Marine and Navy Families.
