Heart to Heart

A military wife entered the ballroom at the Desert Princess Resort where the 2014 Heart to Heart Luncheon was held on March 8, 2014, but her heart wasn’t in it. Her mind was on her husband at home, an eight combat tour veteran who was being medically retired from the Marine Corps. He was suffering from severe post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury, and that day had had trouble even remembering the most basic of tasks, how to fill out a check.

The spouse was worried about leaving him that day, even for the few hours attending Heart to Heart would take, but by the end of the luncheon she had found some relief. She was introduced to a woman who works for an organization training service dogs, and had received information about getting a dog to help her husband heal. Though she was unsure at first, attending Heart to Heart gave that spouse a little bit of hope and a lot of support, which is exactly what the event organizers hope to do each year. One hostess for the event said with tears in her eyes “If we only helped that woman, if all of this only accomplished only that one thing, then it was worth it.”

Each year nearly 200 active duty females and active duty spouses attend the Heart to Heart Luncheon in Palm Springs. These deserving ladies are treated to an afternoon of pampering with a luncheon, guest speakers, live entertainment, prizes, gift baskets and more in recognition of their service alongside their husbands or as active duty service members themselves.
