The ASY Summer Camp is always a great experience for the children from Twentynine Palms. As expected some are often home sick, especially if it is their first time away from family. One boy was particularly upset when he came with a cabin mate to talk to the ASY staffer about going home. When the staffer asked him why he wanted to go home, he said it was because he missed his family and that his dad was a Marine so his whole family lived on the Marine Base. At this point, the cabin mate who came with him spoke up and said, “My dad is a Marine too and that is where we live!” There was an instant bond between these two boys as neither one had realized what exactly they had in common by being Military children. After that night, the homesick boy stopped asking to go home. It is truly amazing how the kids that attend Summer Camp can all come from a small, close knit Military community where they play with each other but never realize what exactly that their families all share with each other. The words cannot express how the staff feels about being able to bring these kids together and help them understand that although they are unique because they are Military children, they are not alone.
