Through our Mother Son Annual Adventure, mothers and sons in both the Anchorage and Fairbanks areas spend quality time together enjoying the vast beauty that is the Last Frontier. Designed to promote a strong mother-son bond, this afternoon of adventure encourages moms and their boys to explore together and have a great time.

Anchorage-area Adventure to Spencer Glacier

Moms and sons, enjoy a spectacular train ride on Alaska Railroad to the Spencer Glacier, where a scenic 2.6-mile hike awaits. Meet the train in Portage at Whistle Stop #2, between miles 80-81 on the Seward Highway.

Date: August 3 or 4 (pick your date during registration)
Cost: $30/per person

Fairbanks-area Adventure to Denali

Experience Denali National Park in a day full of fun, nature and quality time for Mothers and Sons. This experience includes bus transportation (POV not available), a sled dog kennel tour with meet and great, a picnic lunch at Mountain Vista Rest Area, a Ranger-guided walk at Mountain Vista, free time at the Visitor's Center, Breakfast and an afternoon snack and a family-friendly movie on the ride home.

Check-in: 7:15-7:45 am
Departure: 8:00 am
Return: 7:00 pm
Cost: $25/per person
Ages: 6 years (entering 1st Grade) and up

ELIGIBILITY:

  • This opportunity is for children of an active duty, guard or reserve service member.
  • A significant female role model is invited to join a young man if his mother is not available. This includes a guardian, caretaker during deployment, community mentor, grandparent, or other relative.

 

CONSIDERATIONS FOR ANCHORAGE AREA EVENT:

The following conditions should be considered in determining if this event is suitable for you and/or your child’s developmental stage:

  • The length of the hike is 1.3 miles each direction - 2.6 miles total - on well-groomed trails.
  • Time allotted to complete the hike is approximately 50-60 minutes each way.
  • Please be prepared for mud and the potential for inclement weather.
  • Participants must provide their own transportation to the Portage Whistle Stop, which is approximately a 1.5-hour drive outside Anchorage.
  • This is a rain or shine adventure. Please pack a day pack to include a refillable water bottle, extra socks, a hat, and layered clothing appropriate for the weather. Closed-toed shoes are required.

 

CONSIDERATIONS FOR FAIRBANKS AREA EVENT:

The following conditions should be considered in determining if this event is suitable for you and/or your child’s developmental stage:

  • This event features activities that include dogs. For safety reasons, child attendees must be age 6 (entering 1st Grade) or older.
  • Participants must be able to follow any instructions that guides and kennel staff members may issue in regards to proper etiquette around the animals.
  • This event will take place rain or shine. Please pack a day pack to include a refillable water bottle, extra socks, a hat, and layered clothing appropriate for the weather. Closed-toed shoes are required.

REGISTRATION:

Registration is taken on a first-come, first-served basis for eligible participants, and is subject to selling out. 

 

Cancellations and Refunds:

Rosters are submitted to partner agencies at the completion of registration. For this reason, we can not offer any refunds for cancellations. Please consider your schedule carefully before committing to registration. In the event you are not able to join us, please inform our staff so we can release your spot to a waitlist family.
