31925145_1594828247282695_3735119120715218944_oEach summer, the Armed Services YMCA partners with YMCA affiliates across the country to help send military kids to camp. In 2018, this initiative has allowed over 2,000 more military children across the country to attend day and overnight camps this summer! We’re spreading the good news with a blog series highlighting the various programs offered at the summer camps, ranging from STEAM (Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) experiments, to cooking classes, Tae Kwon Do and more!

Check out this week’s quick Q&A with YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region Military Outreach and Program Director, Drew Aquino, as he shares information about their summer camp partnership with ASYMCA!

Question:

Drew, it’s very nice to have a moment to chat with you today! Can you tell us a little bit about the summer camp program offered at YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region?

Answer:

Sure! Our summer day camps kicked off on May 21st and will wrap up on August 23rd. We’re offering camp at 7 different locations this summer to reach as many children as possible! Each week will feature a different theme, ranging from “myths and legends” to “where the wild things are.” Our camp program incorporates a range of interactive activities including arts and crafts, music, swimming, sports & fitness and more! Registration is open to children ages 5-12.

Question:

How many military children are registered to attend camp this summer?

Answer:

Our partnership with the ASYMCA has helped over 200 military children attend camp with us this summer!

Question:

Why do you think camp is so important?

Answer:

We’re always excited to offer summer camp to children across Pikes Peak Region. We’re especially excited about our partnership with ASYMCA that will allow more military children to join us this summer. Camp offers children the opportunity to connect through fun, interactive activities. It also offers them an opportunity to learn through discovery, and challenges them to grow in imagination, creativity and leadership!
