27th Annual Five Star Military Family Recognition Luncheon


The 27th Annual Five Star Military Family Recognition Luncheon was held on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at The Westin Town Center in Virginia Beach. Created in 1994, The Five Star is an annual event that recognizes active-duty service members and their families who enhance our Hampton Roads community through their dedication to philanthropic service and volunteerism. The community contributions of our military families often go unnoticed. These are our patriots who support their family members while enriching the communities they call home. The Army Times reported November 8, 2021 – Military service members average 96 hours of volunteer work a year compared to 74 hours for non-military. The Syracuse University Institute for Veterans & Military Families reports that because service members have already volunteered to serve their country, they are likely willing to continue this service through engaging in volunteer work.

Here in Hampton Roads, we have the highest concentration of military personnel outside of the Pentagon. We see all the ways our military members support their community. We see them behind the scenes; showing up before the sun rises and staying after everyone else has cleared out for the day. They are committed. They show up when asked and stay until the job is finished. The Five Star Military Family Recognition Luncheon is our opportunity to express gratitude to these selfless families. Congratulations to our Five Highlighted Military Families, Army – the Oliver Family, Marine – the Lee Family, Navy – the Berland Family, Air Force – the Winchell Family, and Coast Guard – the Smith Family. Their volunteer and philanthropic efforts are truly making a difference in our Hampton Roads Community!
