A full pantry, especially in a crisis, means so much more than a full stomach. It means peace of mind. It means security. It means providing for your children.
Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, military families have demonstrated a greater need in terms of food insecurity. Armed Services YMCA Branches provide critical support in this regard in many locations. We applaud branch leadership, staff and volunteers for moving quickly to meet this need.
As a result of their commitment to serve our military families, we have distributed more than 250,000 pounds of food - serving more than 10,000 families and 20,000 children.
In March 2020, military families faced a challenge no one could have imagined.
COVID-19 began to ravage our nation, affecting every aspect of our society. The challenges have proven complex, evolving and far-reaching. Military spouses, already unemployed at six times the rate of their civilian counterparts prior to the pandemic, faced even more financial challenges. The crushing wave of job losses continues to impact these young families particularly hard, making it difficult to make ends meet. The military is doing everything they can to help, including partnering with Armed Services YMCA to provide core programs and services.
Armed Services YMCA quickly assessed how best to meet the new needs of military families in this dynamic environment while managing the economic toll the pandemic will have across the enterprise. With in-person programs and many child care centers closed, Armed Services YMCA would need the support of its corporate partners to prevent a disruption of core programs needed by military families. Companies like USAA, GEICO Military, Leonardo DRS Technologies, Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation, and others answered the call. We gratefully acknowledge the support of our sponsors and their commitment to Strengthening Our Military Family®.
