For the past 20 years ASYMCA El Paso has conducted the Annual Turkey and Thanksgiving food basket giveaway. Fort Bliss military units voluntarily collect donations of non-perishable foods for Soldiers and Military Families in need to help run this program.
The annual food giveaway is organized by the Armed Services YMCA El Paso. The event costs about $35,000. The entire program is supported with donated money and food from individuals, businesses, organizations, churches and schools. The giveaway benefits junior enlisted soldiers -- primarily sergeants and below -- who have families and some National Guard and Reserve members. Recipients were selected by their units based on need and family size.
"I feel the generosity every time I come here," said Lauren Perez, who received a turkey. "They make me feel like I'm part of the family."
"We want to tell our soldiers how much we appreciate their sacrifices and the sacrifices made by their families," said Joe Pritchard, Executive Director, Armed Services YMCA El Paso.
The City of El Paso really rallies behind this effort - We couldn't do this without the support of the community.
