The Armed Services YMCA of Hampton Roads is, once again, gearing up for a season of giving. Operation Holiday Joy is an annual program that provides holiday meal assistance to junior enlisted families in need. By partnering with Navy Federal, USAA, Geico Military, the JEB Little Creek Catholic Fund and individual donors, we are able to fill baskets with all the makings for a delicious Thanksgiving dinner.
Last year, we provided over 700 meal baskets to military families in Hampton Roads. In a community with the highest concentration of military personnel outside the Pentagon, we’ve seen an increasing demand for assistance around the holidays. Due to that increased demand for assistance, our goal is to provide 1000 baskets this year. According to Feeding America, 1 in 8 Americans struggles with hunger. In 2016, 12.9 million children lived in food-insecure households. The holidays can be an especially difficult time for families due to the additional financial stressors.
Would you like to sponsor a military family in need? For a contribution of just $25, you can make sure that a military family has a full Thanksgiving meal this year. To sponsor a Hampton Roads family, make your donation today. We also count on donations of non-perishable food items from the community. We ask that donors contribute full meals containing the following; can of green beans, can of corn, can of yams, can of cranberries, box of mashed potatoes, box of stuffing, packet of gravy and a box of brownies (or other boxed dessert).
