Families Catch a Good Time at ASYMCA Fort Bragg's Fishing Derby

Armed Services YMCA Fort Bragg hosted their annual ASYMCA Fishing Derby on May 6th. This was the 9th year the fishing derby took place in Fayetteville, NC. The event provides time for military families and friends to spend quality time through a day of fishing. Fishing took place at the John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center. One hundred children participated in the event and were accompanied by at least one parent. The event is open to everyone, though the majority of participants are military connected.

Despite the weather being cold and rainy, the families and fish didn’t seem to mind. ASYMCA Fort Bragg Executive Director, Kathy Foxen said it was a truly enjoyable experience. “This is a time for families to disconnect from their routine and connect with each other. I especially liked seeing the expression of accomplishment for children catching their first fish.  And for many, that same excitement carries into catch seven and eight.”

The day of fishing was perfect for those learning or familiar with the sport. Children and families had opportunities to win various prizes. Trophies were awarded for the largest fish and most fish. First, second, and third place finishers were recognized in those categories. “Most Unusual Catch” was also awarded, which happened to be turtles!

Foxen knows the event provides much more to the children than a fishing experience. “We have the privilege of bringing families together for a relaxing time.  Dads, moms, and grandparents have an opportunity to share a favorite pastime with the children.” She continued, “This event provides families an opportunity to get away for a few hours and enjoy a stress free time together.”
