Armed Services YMCA Hampton Roads Campers got the opportunity to move their summer fun and learning out of the building and onto the water last week! Dressed to impress, 50 of our campers got to dine, dance, play games, see the sights and learn about weird plants during their Spirit of Norfolk Cruise.
In addition to the unique experience of any Spirit of Norfolk Cruise, these campers got the bonus of learning about weird and wonderful plants. Norfolk Botanical Gardens created a unique, SOL based learning experience specifically for the cruise. Campers were encouraged to look at plants differently as they learned about carnivorous plants, how seeds travel, the relationship between flowers and pollinators, plants that set records, and more. Many of the campers expressed their delight at getting to handle funny plants and seeds. Seven-year-old Anna confided that “making special flower pictures” was her very favorite part of the day.
The youngest campers were most enthusiastic about the delicious lunch (and dessert) options. Most of the older campers enjoyed the dancing, singing, learning and playing. “We lost our voices from all the singing,” said almost eight-year-old Madi. “It was SO much fun.”
Between learning about weird plants, getting down on the dance floor and eating a delicious lunch – these kiddos had a fantastic day on the water. Summer is definitely treating these campers right!
