Summer Camp at YMCA of Southern Arizona

vetEach summer, the Armed Services YMCA supports ASYMCA branches and YMCA affiliates across the country to help send military kids to camp. This initiative has allowed over 2,000 military children across the country to attend day and overnight camps this summer!

We’re spreading the good news with a blog series highlighting the various programs and curriculums offered at the summer camps, ranging from STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) experiments, to cooking classes, Tae Kwon Do and more!

Check out this week’s Q&A with YMCA of Southern Arizona, Triangle Y Ranch Camp Executive Director, Huy Lu, as he shares information about their summer programs.

Question:

Can you tell us a little bit about the summer camp program offered at YMCA of Southern Arizona?

Answer:

Sure! Our camp program is based on the four core YMCA values: caring, honest, respect and responsibility. We offer camps for military kids, summer day camps, retreats, overnight camps and family camps.

Question:

How many children attended camp this summer?

Answer:

We had a total of 929 campers for 7 weeks, nearly 200 were military children.

Question:

Can you tell us a little bit about your camp for military kids?vet-1

Answer:

We're excited to partner with the non-profit Camp Corral to offer a free, one-of-a-kind summer camp to children of wounded, disabled, and fallen military service members. These special weeks of traditional camp celebrate our military community and give campers the chance to just be kids. Triangle Y Ranch Camp is one of twenty-two sites in the nation selected to host Camp Corral.

Providing positive, recreational experiences in the outdoors helps foster resilience, and Camp Corral has proven to be a ‘week of a lifetime.’ The week also encourages the campers to create friendships and bond with other kids who share similar family situations. Your camper will spend the week outdoors enjoying the many traditional overnight camp activities Triangle Y Ranch Camp has to offer: swimming, archery, high ropes, zip line, hiking, wilderness, and more!

Question:

We heard that the Triangle Y Ranch is is one of the most popular overnight camps in Arizona! What makes it so great?

Answer:

The Triangle Y Ranch is one of the oldest (since 1949) and most popular overnight camps in Arizona and for good reason! We have 300 acres in the beautiful Santa Catalina Mountains, and campers come from all over, from Tucson and Phoenix, of course, but also quite a few from out of state. Tri-Y is one of the premier overnight camps in the nation and our families have lots of reasons to brag about us. We have excellent camper to staff rations, full-time nurse on staff, 24-hour camp supervision, and exciting activities such as caving, zip lining, horseback riding and much more.
