When it comes to summer fun and learning in Hampton Roads, the Armed Services YMCA Operation Camp program delivers. With numerous opportunities for STEM based learning, field trips and in-house activities, these campers had a summer packed with learning and fun.
Each week, campers had the opportunity to swim and play at the Gator Water Park on JEB Little Creek, dance-dance-dance during Zumba for Kids, bowl at Gator Bowl and head out into Hampton Roads for a field trip. Weekly themes coincided with the summer’s theme of Island Adventures. From Survivor Island to Pirates and Mermaids, our Summer Camp Facilitators made each week a fun and educational experience.
Field trips are obviously a highlight for our campers. Especially our campers who know what to expect. Madison has been attending Operation Camp in Hampton Roads for three years now. Her favorite part of the summer? Getting all dressed up and cruising on the Spirit of Norfolk. “The food is sooooo good! And the dancing is soooooo much fun,” she said excitedly. Another highlight of the summer is the annual trip to Busch Gardens. These kiddos don’t scare easily. Roller coasters are no big deal. Zip-lining at the Adventure Park is all in a day’s work. Petting stingrays is a walk in the park.
Operation Camp isn't just adventuring and learning, it's also a TON of FUN. You can tell by the way campers squealed with delight when they spotted their first pair of dolphins during the Rudee Flipper dolphin watching cruise. Or the way they sang until they lost their voices at numerous dance parties throughout the summer. Or simply by the way they fell into bed each night exhausted by the excitement of the day.
In addition to heading out into Hampton Roads for some amazing field trips, our campers also got quite a few fun visitors at the Armed Services YMCA. It got a little MAD and extra awesome with a visit from Mad Science for a hands-on Super Structures Workshop. Books, books and more books were the theme of a visit from the Virginia Beach Public Library when all the campers went home with brand new books to read. Our campers even got the chance to build and play with Rear Admiral Charles Rock.
Our hearts aren't quite ready for the school year to start, but we've been hard at work all week transforming our summer camp space into a ready-for-school space. Are you ready for the school year to start? Check out these tips and resources we put together or get more information on our Before and After School Care program. We can’t wait to show off our school-ready look.
