LAWTON, OK – At the beginning of the 2018-’19 school year, the Armed Services YMCA Lawton Fort Sill launched a brand new state-of-the-art before and after school care room.
This room provides children with a fun, engaging space to learn new skills, improve their social connections and receive homework help. It follows a STEAM and Conscious-Discipline curriculum, serving kids four to age 12.
Children are fed breakfast and an after-school snack. Transportation to school is also provided!
As an organization, we saw a need in the community for this type of service and knew we wanted to get involved.
"Our mission is to strengthen military families, and in order to do that, we need to provide as many opportunities to hold onto our families as long as we can, says ASYMCA Executive Director Carol Herrick.
“So, through all of our programs -- to include our child development center, our soldier's closet and food pantry -- we want to make sure that we have as many opportunities to touch these families as possible."
We are overjoyed at the positive response this new room has received! And this room is only the beginning – plans are already in motion to open a second before and after school care room!
Currently, the Explorer’s Room is at full capacity, but we are accepting applicants for our wait list!
