SOAPBOX DERBY 2017, A RACE FOR THE BOOK!
On Saturday, March 18th, the Armed Services YMCA hosted their annual Soapbox Derby Race in conjunction with the Twentynine Palms Chamber of Commerce Street Fair and Car Show. The derby kicked off the Car Show and took place right on Highway 62 in Twentynine Palms.
ASYMCA Executive Director, Dawn Clark, feels that; “The Soap Box Derby is a great partnership with the community to promote family bonding, team spirit and all around fun. The ASYMCA couldn't put this on without the help of sponsors who donate water and snacks, t-shirts, racing kits and their valuable time. Our volunteers are out in the sun running up and down the hills with the cars throughout the entire event. Their efforts are gallant to say the least”
This annual community event gives families an opportunity to work as a team, build communication skills and bond over a shared goal as they design, build and race their cars together. This year, we had 29 racers come out to compete, and face off in their own handcrafted, personalized derby car. They had the freedom to let their creativity flow to make it their very own dream car. From feathers and stars, to tanks and Star Wars, we’ve seen it all.
Clark believes that “Parents and the children who build the cars together, get to see the reward of their hard work at this event. This year Costco was our finish line sponsor. Mayfield College and Fort Sill National Bank (FSNB) sponsored the shirts for every participant. The ASYMCA has great community support to make this happen each year.”
