Each year, Armed Services YMCA 29 Palms Branch partners with Family YMCA of the Desert to send 50 military kids, ages 8-15, to camp in Big Bear, CA. The kids spend an entire week enjoying the fresh air and activities that Camp Oakes has to offer. Camp Oakes is a unique opportunity for the kids to make friends, learn responsibility, cooperation, leadership and respect. We also had the opportunity to send a dozen Active Duty Military volunteers to help participate as Camp Counselors for the week.

On Sunday, June 20th, all kids and their parents met at the Twentynine Palms High School for their child to get onto the bus for their trip up to Big Bear. We saw some hot weather that day, but our kids and military volunteers were looking forward to the nice weather they were going to encounter in Big Bear!

Some of the activities that the kids participated in throughout the week included archery, fishing, ropes course, climbing wall, nature hikes, and much more!

The kids and military volunteers were transported back to Twentynine Palms on the bus on Saturday, June 26th, with parents waiting with open arms and open ears to hear their kids stories about a week at camp!

Thank you to all our donors who make these experiences possible for our military and their families.
