Learning to Live Aloha while hiking 3-miles in and out of Kamananui Valley

 

When:

• Living aloha is a journey, not a destination. It’s about cultivating a mindset that embraces compassion and understanding. Kamananui Valley Trail, also known as Moanalua Valley Trail, is an easy 8-mile roundtrip hike.We will complete a 1.5-mile portion of the hike, 3 miles roundtrip. The trail and its neighborhood are significant because of its history, dating back to 1884 when Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, granddaughter of Kamehameha the Great, and the last living member of the House of Kamehameha, gifted 6,000 acres of land to Samuel Mills Damon. One of the four Damon children, Douglas Damon, built his home in Kamananui Valley, on the footprint of a country home used by some of the Kamehameha dynasty. We will visit ruins of the Damon house and learn about Moanalua’s revered and sacred petroglyph boulder, Pohakukaluahine, "Rock of the Old Woman." We look forward to sharing the story of Pōhakukaluahine, the Damons, and Moanalua Valley with you.

Armed Services YMCA Hawaii's "Kokua Connection - Learning to Live Aloha" programs and events encourage curiosity and fosters understanding of Native Hawaiian culture. A part of "learning to live aloha" means understanding the cultural significance of tropical plants, their use and history. This event features a guided tour of 21 Degrees Estate Cacao Farm and Hawaii agriculture, including history and an introduction to lush tropical plants and their healing properties, including many of the original canoe crops, and a mini honey and chocolate tasting.

Cost:

• $10 per person. Event is valued at $30 per person

• Loko Pā'aiau is a Native Hawaiian National Historic Landmark that dates back 400 years. Learn about this sacred space and help restore it by clearing invasive species, planting native species, and moving rocks to fill the pond wall.
• Loko Pā'aiau is a natural ecological environment, under restoration. It is not a recreational site with sitting areas, paved sidewalks, etc.
• All ages are welcome. Children must be under parent/guardian supervision at all times.

This hands-on camp promotes creativity, productivity, problem solving, and teamwork, all while having fun learning about Science, Technology, Enginnering, Art, and Math.
