KIBO Comes to Parent Participation Preschool
Children deserve high-quality early education programs that nurture their social, emotional, physical, and academic development. Armed Services YMCA is thrilled to introduce KIBO, made possible by the generosity of Hawaii Electric, to our preschool program. What is KIBO? KIBO is a fun, evidence-based, screen-free robotics curriculum that introduces children to coding.
Why is teaching coding to preschoolers so important? "Because coding is the literacy of the 21st century." Just as learning how to write well is vital to self-expression, so coding will be in the years to come. Furthermore, early exposure to robotics, coding, and engineering increase a child's confidence in continuing to pursue those subjects throughout their life. This is especially important for young girls.
KIBO introduces robotics and coding to young children by engaging their curiosity and sparking imagination while also teaching problem-solving, collaboration, and tenacity. "KIBO’s block-based coding language gives children control over the robot’s movements, sounds, and sensors, allowing them to express their imaginations with code. KIBO encourages children to tell stories, create characters, and explore their world." KIBO incorporates science, technology, engineering, math and the arts!
Our Honu and Naia preschool classes were introduced to KIBO in September and will begin fully engaging with the robots this month. October's theme is "On the Farm." Some of our classes will be learning about tractors and how they work. Preschoolers will be dressing up their KIBO like a tractor. Stay tuned for fun photos!
We can't wait to see what our preschoolers will continue to create with KIBO this month and beyond!
