Summer Camp

Each year the ASY spends a week at Summer Camp with 50-100 military children at Camp Oakes in Big Bear, CA. While having a great time is always the ASY’s number one tradition at Summer Camp, many other favorite activities include raising and lowering the colors every morning and evening, singing songs and performing skits around the camp fire, special themed dinners, a masquerade dance, evening games of “manhunt,” gaga ball , and more. Though the activities can be challenging for some campers, over the course of the week they learn to face their fears and overcome whatever obstacles they face, whether they come in the form of the rock climbing wall or just in learning to make new friends when they don’t know anyone else. The campers’ parents see the difference that a week at camp makes in their children immediately:

“Summer Camp was the experience of a lifetime for my child. I just want to thank everyone for being so wonderful”

“Thank you, thank you, thank you all so very much. Please keep doing what you do. You all are amazing! You all went above and beyond!”

“I did not consider the effect camp would have on my child before she left. I didn’t realize that she too has a very stressful life. Getting away from it all, focusing on herself and building relationships with other children really had a positive experience on her. Military children move constantly and that first day at a new school can be dramatic. This opportunity for the kids to go to camp together really alleviated the stress of the first day of school this year. My daughter went to school already knowing other children and feeling comfortable. It was amazing!”

“My daughter had a wonderful experience at camp this year. She enjoyed last year but could not stop talking about this year’s camp. Her camp leader made it a truly beautiful time in her life. One she will always hold on to.”
